“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.”

It turns out that Anne Frank was right. She might have been speaking about something else entirely, but she certainly hit the nail on the head when it comes to home improvement projects.

So if you are planning on sprucing up your home or simply looking for new design ideas to try out in your spare time, the following list contains some great articles and guides that are a must read for any home improvement enthusiast.

Best Home Improvement Blogs

Designer Trapped

Designer Trapped is run by a North Carolina mom named Tasha, who used to be a lawyer in her previous life. She got interested in DIY projects because it was the only way that she and her husband could afford to remodel their home back in 2002.

The current blog setup makes it very easy for readers to locate design topics. It even separates the articles by subjects such as crafts, furniture, and flooring. Of course, her organizational projects are sure to come in handy, particularly for parents or anyone else with more stuff than space. This is definitely one to bookmark for future use.

DIY Show Off

This is another good place to go if you’re looking for inspiration on your DIY quest. Those seeking specific articles can find them easily by clicking on the room or home renovation headers on the main page. Other readers can just browse the website for more ideas.

The blog creator is a mom named Roeshel, who lives near Pittsburg. She got her start by chronicling her own before and after projects. She’s also into essential oils, natural living, and the occasional product roundup. However, the meat and potatoes of her space is definitely her idea galleries.

Ugly Duckling House

The elegant but simple style of this blog is a refreshing change of pace. Sarah, the blog owner, has been renovating her home in Atlanta, Georgia for some time now. Perhaps the best part is that, unlike most home improvement bloggers, this tough lady is doing it all on her own and chronicling the results as they happen rather than on a set schedule.

Sarah is a pet owner and she enjoys cooking, so those topics do make appearances on her site from time to time. However, the most recent posts have discussed decorating challenges, a kitchen update, and how to make triangular tealights.

Remodelaholic

This is another blog that combines a clean, straightforward web design with useful DIY information. The owner Cassity is a married interior designer who currently has two kids, two cats, and two roosters. She and her husband have already remodeled four houses and they’re currently at work on their fifth project.

Her site tackles topics such as making your own shelving units, creating mason jar spice racks, and improving your home’s curb appeal. It also discusses things like hairstyles for kids and prints for their rooms. As a result, parents who want to improve their homes will probably get the most use out of this website.

Refresh Restyle

Colorful but not too busy, this website mostly focuses on craft and painting projects. It also contains some good articles on refurbishing furniture. However, the latest articles have covered topics such as creating photo displays, having at-home spa parties, and making your own message board.

Refresh Restyle is currently run by Debbie Westbrook, a family-oriented DIY enthusiast.

This Old House

This blog was created by the same brilliant minds who brought you the Emmy Award-winning show by the same name. Just as the show tackles seemingly impossible home remodel projects in a brilliantly approachable way, so too do these great posts.

Whether you’re looking to improve your old house, make your new house feel a little more like home, or just need a weekend project to keep you busy, you’ll find it on this site. They have thousands of articles covering every room in the home. Or search by category to find projects related to cleaning, pets, tools, and more.

And if you ever need a little more inspiration than the great articles and pictures provided, you can easily swing over to the watch tab to see these improvements in action on This Old House. This show is still running at 44 seasons and counting and has produced numerous spin-off DIY shows that are just as good.

Whether you want to read or watch, this blog has you covered.

Young House Love

This amazing home improvement and renovation blog is run by a young couple who fell in love with DIY home projects after getting their first fixer-upper. Now, fourteen years later, the pair have renovated seven homes and written multiple books on home improvement.

On the blog, you’ll find over 3,000 different DIY projects as well as humorous and personal articles that every homeowner can relate to. You can search before-and-afters of their many houses for inspiration or browse by category to find your next weekend project.

For those that don’t have time to read all the great articles Young House Love has to offer, you’re in luck. These busybodies also have a podcast that dives into home improvement projects, features interviews with industry professionals, and more.

Remodelista

If what you’re really after is a little inspiration, then step on over to Remodelista. This blog was started by four designer friends with a passion for making houses into homes. The William Morris quote featured on the site sums up what you’ll find here pretty well: “Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.”

All the projects on this site seem to combine these two ideas, giving you plenty of ways to make your home more functional while always adding beauty. In addition to numerous DIY guides for kitchen and bath renovations, the site also features plenty of articles that cover others’ renovations so you can find the inspiration you need to move forward.

For those looking for inspiration in the yard, be sure to check out their sister site, Gardenista.

For those after practical posts that will help them get through everything from remediations to seasonal cleaning, Home Tips is an amazingly useful site. It is run by a family of professional home improvers. These guys have been helping people care for and improve their homes for over 25 years using articles, books, TV appearances, and more.

Of their thousand-plus articles, they have a number on DIY home repairs, plenty of remodeling guides, and some great product recommendations. Their site is easy to navigate, allowing you to choose articles based on the appliance type, area, or guide type. Whatever issue you’re having with your home, these guys have written about it.

Crafty Little Gnome

This fun and inspiring blog is perfect for those who prefer to stay on the lighter side of home improvement. You won’t find any kitchen renovation guides or knock-out-a-wall projects on this site. But you will find plenty of great little home decor and home hack articles that every homeowner can put to use.

The blog is run by Adrienne Carrie Hubbard, a jewelry designer who has made home crafting her full-time job. Her eye for detail and busybody brain have helped her create some great design projects that don’t take a lot of time or money.

But what I find even more useful than her craft posts are her great home hack articles. For instance, did you know you can use potato starch to get blood out of carpet or that there is a special brush for cleaning pizza stones? You’ll learn all these tips and more through this great blog.

Houzz

Once you’ve browsed the sites on our list, it’s time to head over to Houzz to turn your remodeling project into a reality. This site is all about product recommendations and hooking you up with professionals that can help make your project a reality. Of course, if you still aren’t exactly sure what you want to create, they have plenty of inspiration for that too, thanks to their endless collection of idea posts.

While Houzz has always been good for all the features mentioned above, one of the newer aspects of the site is what we love best. The members’ forums allow you to post questions and get advice from real professionals and other homeowners who have been through it all before. This is one blog worth creating a profile for.
