7 Ways To Remove Scratches From a Glass Cooktop

The right method for repairing your glass stove top depends on how prominent the scratch is. The following options work well on minor, shallow scratches and scuff marks.

Stop! Using the wrong cookware on your glass cooktop will scratch it again. Learn about which cookware you should use here.

Use a Glass Repair Kit

One of the best options available is using a basic glass repair kit which is safe for the finish you have on your stove top. Extra caution is needed to not cause further damage.

You Will Need

Step by Step Instructions

Depending on the type of kit you purchase, the instructions will vary. Follow the steps listed in the repair kit you bought to best repair your style of glass stovetop.

Use Baking Soda

use baking soda to remove scratches in cooktop

Baking soda is one of the simplest methods available. It utilizes regular items you might have around the home and is not dry or abrasive when properly mixed.

You Will Need

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Make a loose, wet paste by combining baking soda with water in a small container.
  2. Apply the paste directly to a cool stove top using your fingers.
  3. Use the soft cloth to gently buff the scratches or scuffs in a circular motion
  4. Wipe away the paste using a clean, damp cloth

At this point, any scratches or scuff marks should have disappeared.

You can follow up by applying a glass cooktop cleaner to apply a protective coating.

Toothpaste Method

use toothpaste to repair scratches in glass stove top

Toothpaste sounds like a strange option, but it is effective because it includes ingredients like baking soda and peroxide. Combined, these innocuous ingredients are capable of buffing out small abrasions without damaging the surrounding glass.

This method is very similar to using baking soda.

You Will Need

Step by Step Instructions

  1. To begin, squeeze a small amount of toothpaste onto one of the soft cloths.
  2. Apply the paste to the damaged area and rub it in with a circular motion for up to 1 minute.
  3. Wet a cloth until it is damp and then wipe up as much toothpaste as possible.
  4. Finally, wipe the stovetop down with the dry cloth to clean up any leftover liquid.
  5. You can repeat this until the desired outcome is achieved.

This method is now complete, and is also effective at lifting up stubborn food stains.

Once again, you can optionally follow up by applying a glass cooktop cleaner to apply a protective coating.

Nail Polish Method

nail polish covers up scratches in glass

The nail polish method is ideal for covering and hiding larger areas of damage. The clear polish combined with glass polish eliminates scuff marks and scrapes better than other options and also leaves you with a clear, shiny stove top.

You Will Need

  • Clear nail polish
  • Light buffing pad
  • Glass polish

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Use the brush which comes with the clear nail polish to completely cover scratches or damage on the stovetop.
  2. Wipe away any excess polish before it dries so it doesn’t become stuck to the stove.
  3. Allow the remaining polish to dry for 30 minutes.
  4. Using a non-abrasive pad, gently buff each area with nail polish for 30 seconds.
  5. Once complete, place a small amount of the glass polish on the buffing pad and touch up the areas you just treated.

At the end, the nail polish will have hopefully hidden the worst of the scratches.

Try a Metal Polish

Some metal cleaners, also called polishes, are suitable to use on glass. This option removes scuffs and scratches while polishing the entire stove top so it is presentable and ready to be used again.

You Will Need

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Pour a small amount of the cleaner on your cloth and pad.
  2. Gently buff scratched or scuffed areas by moving the pad in a circular motion.
  3. Once finished, use another damp, clean cloth to remove the cleaner.
  4. Dry with a separate soft cloth for the best results.

Ammonia

ammonia

Ammonia is a common substance for household cleaning with a strong chemical formula that will be tough on damage but soft on your stovetop.

For this method, you will need to make an ammonia solution and need the following items.

You Will Need

Step by Step Instructions

  1. You first need to mix an ammonia solution by combining 20 ml of ammonia with 473 ml of water (1 pint).
  2. Next, wet the soft cloth with the solution and carefully buff scratches in a circular motion.
  3. Repeat the process as necessary to eliminate scuffs and scratches.
  4. Allow the solution to dry before cooking again.

Ceramic Cleaning Cream

A ceramic cleaning cream is similar to a metal polish and can be purchased from similar stores. It is best at buffing out scrapes and does not work for deeper scratches.

You Will Need

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Apply a small amount of cleaning cream to the soft cloth and buff scuffed areas in a circular motion. Spend 30 seconds on each area.
  2. Repeat step 1 until scratches disappear.
  3. Wipe away the polish with a separate dry cloth.
  4. Wipe the area again, this time with a wet piece of fabric.

The Final Word

While damaging a glass stove top can seem like the end of the world, these simple solutions can repair minor damage and have the appliance ready for the next meal. They work on gas and electric stoves and use household materials that you likely already have.

To avoid scuffs and scratches in the future, use the proper cookware and try not to drop metal implements or spill hot food on the surface. These are the most common causes of damage.

It just has to be good old standard white toothpaste. Not the gel stuff.

my roommate caused some small scratches in the center. i wonder what might caused that b/c i looked at her pots and pans, and they are seem like they wouldn’t scratch my glass stovetop.

If there was debris of some sort on the bottom of a pan it might do it without knowing – it could be many things.

I used the toothpaste method, I have to say it was okay but no different than the glass stove top cleaner does.
